VoIP Phones and Nest Thermostats with BT Routers
So, this is a quick technical blog post to assist users out there who have moved to a working from home situation during the COVID-19 crisis.
We recently came across a situation where a user took a Yealink T46S phone to their home and discovered that VoIP calls would drop every 2-3 mins with the handset loosing registration.
The problem became more complex when we isolated the network down and discovered that the cause of the issue with a Google Nest Themostat v3, while this device was connected to the network, the phone would drop calls.
The cause is down to how IPv6 works in stateless configuration from the BT Smart Hub 2, it would appear that the Nest Thermostat is identifying itself as a router on the network and thus intercepting calls.
The solution, is simplicity itself, log in to the BT Smart Hub 2 and switch IPv6 to statefull instead of stateless!
